Children's Concerts
A Young Person's Guide to the Concert Band
Attend our exciting children's concerts held throughout the year. You don't have to be a kid to enjoy them either!
During this special concert, children are invited to sit on the grass, inside a 50-foot circle formed by the band. Adults are encouraged to join in, if accompanied by a child.
The program begins with a march, and we hear how a march is built from percussion, through the bass instruments, then the countermelody and finally the melody instruments into the full march sound.
The conductor introduces each of the instrument families in the band and we hear the individual sounds of the flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba and the percussion section.
A medley from The Wizard of Oz highlights each of the instrumental families. Children are encouraged to approach and enjoy the sonorities surrounding them.
Excerpts from popular movies, such as Fantasia are performed for the children. The conductor may use special effects and costumes to enhance the entertainment experience.
A highlight of the concert is Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, complete with lively narration and performed by the full band.
Seventy Six Trombones gives all a chance to hear instruments in combination and the full symphonic band sound; often followed by a rousing rendition of Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever. Don't be surprised if the kids clap their hands to the beat and start marching in time to the music!
Our program is infinitely adjustable and may include participation of children as guest conductors, to conduct a brief portion of a march, but always to intrigue them in the sonic experience of being in the middle of the band.
